ANDREW
LENAHAN'S
Enjoy Trivia Liner notes: Meaning of the cryptic liner notes (as interpreted by Andrew Lenahan): "notes from a field volume 1. no. 3." - I believe this to be a reference to the "Notes From Afield" feature of "The Annals Of The Institute For Organomic Science", a scientific journal relating to orgone energy, as theorised by the late Wilhelm Reich (see also "Cloudbusting" by Kate Bush). "sleeve designed under e by cally at global antar" - Global Antar seems to have been some sort of design firm, as Cally also did the smashed-tambourine design for the Best of Streetwalkers album. ANTaR, of course, is an Australian Aboriginal advocacy group. "Big shout & 10 K rig to..." - Shout-outs are common mentions of thanks, often seen on hip-hop records. A 10K rig, of course, is a large professional sound system used by DJs. "...Adam & Eve..." - The first humans, from Genesis (not the one with Phil Collins). But this probably refers to remixers Adam & Eve on WEA / EastWest Records. They remixed The Beloved's "Outer Space Girl". "...Phil Perry..." - Flip a coin on this one. It's either the bi-racial American soul singer and songwriter, or the early-1990s remixer from Cowboy Records who was keen on calling everything the "full circle mix". "...Danny Rampling..." - House DJ, mixed Pet Shop Boys' Disco 2 album, among many other things. "...Andy Weatherall..." - Another well-known DJ, see also Sabres Of Paradise (named after the Haysi Fantaysee song, I suppose). "...Terry Farley..." - Yet another DJ, best known as half of Farley And Heller, responsible for one of the remixes of Pet Shop Boys' "Go West". "...Paul Oakenfold..." - DJ, did the future mix of Enjoy (well, duh). See entry in the BIO section. "...Tony Newland..." - Take a guess. Yup, another DJ! But this time, a relatively obscure one. Remixed BBG's "Snappiness" in 1996, also co-produced a Randy Newman cover by Billy MacKenzie of The Associates (Yello's friend, ya know). "...Tommy Timbale..." - Dunno. If he's a DJ, he's beyond even my vast sphere of musical knowledge. Then again, tom/tommy and timbale are both types of drums, so maybe this entry was some kind of joke. "...Rod & Wayne at Eclipse..." - Not as easy as it sounds. There's two different labels called Eclipse Records, but both started in the mid-1990s. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Rod & Wayne are probably the same Rod & Wayne who remixed Marky Mark's "Good Vibrations", at least until somebody else comes up with a better story. "...Craig at Trax..." - Trax possibly refers to Wax Trax, the legendary label which at the time was putting out new material by KMFDM, the KLF, Front Line Assembly, and others. "...Rok & Roj..." - Rok & Roj are leprechauns that live in Simon Toulson-Clarke's medicine cabinet and come out at night to steal his socks. Or maybe I have no idea who they are so I just made that up. You choose. "...Chris Mellor..." - Music Journalist, Editor of DJ Magazine, also DJs himself as Chris Coco. "...Torsten Fenslau..." - DJ and producer with over 100 individual productions to his credit, but probably best-known for Culture Beat's "Mr. Vain". Sadly, Torsten passed away in 1993. He was 29 years old. "...; Abfahrt Über Alles" -
Oh, and we have to end on a high note, don't we? Good thing I'm
fluent in German. Literally "departure over all" in
German, which doesn't make much sense. Probably meant to reference
the "Axis Über Alles" propaganda slogan used by the Nazis in
World War II, but I believe "Abfahrt" here refers to the Abfahrt
Records label, founded by none other than... Torsten Fenslau! Well,
that solves that mystery, then. |
